We have the secret on how you can still buy those tickets right now for 50% off - until they are sold out. Also you will be sitting closer to the top stars in Arthur Ashe Stadium (ex: Row 1-2) for much, much less than those $1,000+ celebrity seats you see during the finals.

Tips for Tennis in the Summer Heat

A message from Tennis-Bargains.com (7/1):

With the major weekend heat and storms knocking out power throughout the area, I just wanted to say that we are so very grateful to all the men and women who have served this country as we approach our nation's Independence Day. It is definitely a good time to hang out at a mall or pool to keep cool and off the roads.

I hope everyone has a terrific 4th of July in the USA and can enjoy a cool holiday.

- JC

Here are some of my tennis tips for surviving the hot, humid conditions this summer:

  • Get up early - I love to practice and play just after sunrise (6-9AM is coolest)
  • Try to find courts with a bit of shade (even if it is just nearby, it will help a lot)
  • Use an ice bag and have an insulated bag and/or cooler on changeovers
  • Drink lots of water and a sports drink
  • Do not over push yourself and know when to take a break
  • If the air quality is Code Red in your area, do not play - if you're not a pro, it's not worth it.

French Open tickets for under 20 euros; plus other gifts from Paris

Nadal: Rome Champion

Congrats to Rafael Nadal for winning his 6th Masters' 1000 Rome Championship today! We're now 6 days away from the 2nd Grand Slam of 2012, the French Open.

Here are some Tennis-Bargain tips to see some great tennis in Paris. It's the weather's perfect in Europe during this time of the year!

Official French Open Gear and Gifts

Even without traveling to France, here are some cool souvenirs you can buy for any tennis friends and family:

How to See the French Open for 20 Euro's

If you're looking for a way to get into the French Open, see Rafa up close at the main stadium and get a ticket to a Grand Slam event for around 20 Euro's, here's how I did it a few years ago! The best time to see lots of the top players in action is this upcoming opening weekend, before any top seeds have been eliminated.

Children's day (May 26, 2012)

The Roland Garros children's day, formerly known as Benny Berthet Day, was first held back in 1977 and is a highly enjoyable event which raises money for good causes. This year it will be held on 26 May. Top players who will be at the tournament take part in one-set exhibition matches on the three show courts (Philippe Chatrier, Suzanne Lenglen and No.1). It is very much a dress rehearsal, with umpires and ball-kids, and it is a wonderful opportunity for fans to come and watch their favorite players whilst helping those less fortunate at the same time.

Doubles Tennis Handbook

Updated 2020:

FYB (Fuzzy Yellow Balls) is out once again with another helpful video program for Doubles players.
Will Hamilton (FYB) teams up with Martina Navratilova to come up with a course to help average doubles players become better prepared with set plays they can run in case your "Plan A" does not work.

Singles Handbook

The Singles Handbook was one I purchased before and covers basics that most 3.5 players and below should learn in order to advance. The trademark theme is a lot of chalk talk with colored magnets on a whiteboard. There is a lot of explanation good for an auditory-based learner.

Sample Doubles Video for "I" Formation

This video series offers some useful tips for the rec player looking to incorporate the "I" formation into their game in this sample video below. In the past, FYB has also provided useful training videos like the Bryan Bros Playbook.

FYB vs TopCourt

FYB has been around almost 10 years, one of the original online training programs. Now they have added a take-home bound playbook to help illustrate the examples.

For a more modern "Netflix / MasterClass" streaming approach, try TopCourt for 14-days absolutely free.

How to save money on Tennis Strings

Tips for Tennis Strings
  1. If your shots seem to be spraying everywhere, it may be time to re-string your racket*
  2. If you find yourself breaking strings too often, then buy a thicker gauge string such as 15g or 16g. The lower the number, the thicker the string and less likely it will snap.
  3. Or try using polyester strings, if you do not have any arm problems.
  4. Keep your rackets cool in an insulated bag, and never store them in a hot car overnight!
  5. Putting them in the trunk will almost guarantee tension loss (and ruining your string job)
  6. Get 10% OFF these longer-lasting polyester strings, which also have extra spin and hold tension for longer. See our reviews of the brands TopSpin and Genesis
  7. Buy tennis strings online in bulk size (called reels) to save on shipping and they are cheaper per set.

Learn to string your own tennis rackets - it's easy!

Buy the $159 Klippermate Tennis Stringer and learn to string at home with some free YouTube videos.

Stringing Machine for Beginners

Super easy to use, even for first-timers. The Klippermate paid for itself in just a matter of months (~10 uses) and you can even charge a little to string for your friends.

Made in the USA with an unlimited, Life-Time Guaranteed. See reviews on Amazon with over 50 positive reviews from stringforum.net as the site's most popular tennis stringing machine

This is the stringing machine that we trust and recommend for its ease of use to beginners. We actually still own and operate one at Tennis-Bargains!

Perhaps most important of all - you can have a freshly strung racket ready in less than an hour.

PracticeHit: Practice Tennis Indoors in the Winter

Tennis-Bargains PracticeHit Review
We were surprised by this simple yet effective tennis stroke trainer that works like a pendulum. The bands at the bottom can be adjusted to effect that the rubber ball's forward and backward pitch. Every time you hit the practice ball, it will snap back ready to be hit again.

Features

  • It comes in a standard 32" shaft size that is the perfect size for kids or adults with a lower strike zone.
  • To Adjust Height: consider putting the base on some cinder bricks to make it a bit taller.
  • Also, we recommend filling the base with sand (instead of water) so that it does not move.

Pros:
  • Great for beginners to develop rhythm on their swing
  • Lots of repetition in a short amount of time
  • Works on developing strike zone slightly in front
  • Allows players to practice moving your feet to the ball as you set up to hit
Cons:
  • Durability is good for only about 1-2 years of regular use
  • May not be useful for more advanced playersay see that the ball holder may start to break apart or the shaft itself will deteriorate from heavy hitting
  • Necessary to invest in a few replacement parts

Amazon.com Holiday Shopping Tips
It is Shopping Season and we love a good Bargain!

Like many tennis fans, we shop at Amazon.com for their price-matching, wide selection (including Tennis Deals) and free shipping over $25.
So here are a few tips for 2012 that will help you save even more money. Hope this comes in handy when you do your online shopping!

Tennis Fitness and Nutrition

Many times we go to hit a ball that is barely out of reach. We wish we were a little faster. We wish if we lost a little more weight, tennis would be much less taxing on our body and joints. Many students focus too heavily on the technical aspects such as correct stroke mechanics but not enough on the fitness and nutritional aspects.

In fact, it has been shown that every pound of body weight you put on, actually puts 4x the pressure on your joints like the knees.

Here is a great site called Fitness for Tennis that can benefit anyone's game (from beginners to pro).

It is unlike P90X or any other workout system because it is designed specifically for tennis players, by professional tennis players and fitness coaches.

Get some free helpful tips, useful articles and also some free videos. Try the full 5 video set for the full 60 day program. Best of all, it comes with a full 365-day money back guarantee. They also guarantee on the site that if you do not gain 1 NTRP, they will allow you to return the product for a full refund. Simply return it for a full refund if you're not satisfied.

Hint: Now at the top of the page, get $10 off the program with their special discount.

As some of the top pro's over the past year like Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish have demonstrated; when your fitness gets better, usually so does your tennis ranking.

Better health. Quicker footwork. Stronger tennis.

Tennis-Bargains Tips
*ALU Power Rough is what Roger Federer uses on his Wilson rackets.

*ALU Power gives a bit more power, but is a bit stiffer than Topspin CyberFlash (which is what I would recommend if you have any sort of tennis elbow or arm problems - it is a softer poly string)

TRX Suspension Trainer Review

TRX Suspension Trainer Review
If you have limited amount of space and time to get an off-court workout, I would recommend looking into resistance training.

For tennis, it is much more helpful in building flexibility and tennis-specific movements than free weights can alone. It is also great as an injury-prevention tool off the court.

I would recommend this type of suspension training over normal gym workouts because there is less impact on your joints such as knees and ankles. It allows you to be creative and carry it all with you in a small bag, making it very portable and efficient.

For myself, I use a system of resistance bands for my indoor training, but currently on the market is a high-quality workout system called TRX Suspension Trainer.

There are a lot of tennis-specific exercises you can do with it too:

Topspin Cyber Blue String Review + YouTube Review

Tennis String Review: Topspin Cyber Blue

Topspin Cyber Blue 1.25 ratings (out of 78 reviews) from Stringforum.net

Topspin Cyber Blue 1.25 17 - Tennis String on Sale

Tennis-Bargains Top String Award
*Tennis-Bargains.com Award*
Cyber Blue offers great control and feel as a durable cross string.

*Update*: David strung his racket at a high tension when he did this demo; David had much better results after lowering his racket tension from 63 lbs to 57 lbs. When you look at the 96% of players reviewers who recommended the string - the tension usually was between 51 lbs and 55 lbs.

Tennis-Bargains Tip:
Also try the spin friendly Cyber Flash string with the thinner 17g (1.25 string) over the 16g for a bit more comfort. Also to avoid a stiff feel with poly strings, it is recommended that you typically string all poly's 10% lower in tension.
