Tennis Camps within Driving Distance from DC

Wintergreen Tennis Academy

Just found out that the former Wintergreen head instructor, Thomas Johnston, is now working as the new Tennis Director at Sea Colony.  I like Wintergreen Resort because it is very close (about 2 hrs drive from DC) and is up in the mountains where it is cooler in the summer time and there are 3 bubble-covered courts with skiing/tubing available there in the winter.  They also offer good prices for play on their Har Tru clay surfaces.

But if you are in the DE area or headed for Bethany beach, I'd recommend you to Thomas @ SeaColony.  He offered a nice 3:1 semi-private weekend session at a very good rate.  His ability to "chalk talk" the fundamentals (especially Doubles and psychology in tennis) is top notch.

Another good coach that usually works at Saddlebrook (Tampa, FL) in the winter and who occasionally coaches at Sea Colony is "Robbie" Stevens. Great personality with fun stories to share. Specializes in volleys and quick fixes for your game.

Here's his bio for Thomas from http://www.seacolonytennis.net/pages/index.cfm?siteid=11683:

Thomas is a three-time collegiate All-American and former head mens' tennis coach at the University of Virginia. At UVA Johnston established himself as one of the most innovative and successful coaches in the country. In 1997, UVA qualified for the national team tournament for the first time in the school's history. In another first, Thomas led his team to the finals of the 1998 ACC championships and NCAA Regional Championships. Under his leadership, the team's NCAA national ranking improved from No. 95 to No. 15. Upon graduating, several of Johnston's students went on to achieve world rankings.

Before joining Sea Colony as the tennis director, Johnston headed an award-winning tennis program at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia for 10 years. Under Johnston's guidance, Tennis Resorts Online.com consistently rated Wintergreen as one of the top 15 tennis resorts and top five adult tennis camps in the world. Wintergreen also achieved TRO's No. 2 ranking for tennis instruction in 2009. In addition, Wintergreen is a perennially top-ranked resort according to Tennis Magazine.
