US Open - getting amazing seats, a fun experience and the best pictures

Getting the Best US Open Experience

Below I've posted some of my best US Open pictures taken personally over the years.

I have personally attended over a decade worth of Grand Slam tennis. Been to NYC dozens of times in my life, as well as had the insider's view at all the other Tennis' Majors: Wimbledon, French Open, and Aussie Open as a tennis fan, coach, photographer, and journalist.

PRO TIP: In August every year, I always find great seats for even SOLD OUT session tickets here.

From past experience, I prefer buying only
verified "Instant Access" tickets from the Official Tickets for the US OpenGenerally, the better seats go fast, so the sooner you look the better. Just be patient and check back every few days to snag them fast!

Finding the best seats with Top players equals great photo opts...

Just being there is an amazing experience every summer. As part of the tennis credentialed media, we are very lucky to get great access to the photo pits. But you as a fan can also get even closer if you know where to go!

Tip #1: Get there early and run to Armstrong or the Grandstand stadiums *first* To get really close, try to sit in the first 2 rows across from the umpire's side or along the center baseline

You can even use cheaper Grounds Pass Tickets for these stadiums during the 1st week of the tournament.

Being able to watch your favorite US Open Champion for an hour? That's every tennis fan's dream! Sometimes you can even bump into the tennis players' box in the catty corners across from the umpire chair. More tips below...

Knowing who will be playing - when and where is half the battle, so you have a chance at witnessing tennis glory in the front rows!

Tip #2:
The night before you go to the US Open, always check the Schedule / "Order of Play" page so you can plan out the next morning. Figure out which players and courts, in the order you want to hop to next.

Download the US Open app for updated scores to see when matches are about to start or end. Plus try time it so that you can get to the stadium entrance line, before the odd-numbered games (so that they let you into the stadiums). Otherwise, you need to wait for another changeover.

Tip #3:
Find tickets to several popular dates, even when "sold out" on the US Open webpage...you can still find season ticket holders willing to sell verified seats at TicketExchange so you don't get scammed by scalpers (*bookmark this listing page* as these best prices are bought/sold/updated daily)!

Last Minute Sales on Great Seats at Clearance Discount Prices!

The US Open has expanded their seating capacity with the new Grandstand stadium, so there is now more room than ever. That means that ticket prices over the next few days will be falling, as fans rush to sell tickets that may have been oversold*

Week 2 = Buyer's Market - Buy 1-2 days in advance. Good Hunting!

The few days just before a match start are the prime buying days. Especially if you've been procrastinating up until now to decide if you want to go or not - this is the best time to check out the online resell prices!

NEVER wait at the box office to buy US Open tennis tickets!

Find "sold-out" US Open tickets here!

Buy Online Tickets instead of Waiting-In-Line at the Box Office
1) SAVE TIME - "there are no lines when you order on-line".
You can get a price check instantly on the exact seat you want. Updated daily. Prices posted by other actual ticket holders who want to sell great seats.

Compare sellers and buyers prices without having to wait long lines. The best seats, even sold out ones are listed for you here. Why would anyone buy them at full retail price anymore??

2) Promo codes (2 for 1 deals and exclusive seats)
If you get to the box office and tell them you see this promo code online and can you please match it, their answer will be, please go online to Ticketmaster.com as we do not accept online codes

3) Get great seat tickets with less money and frustration
It is MUCH easier to use the 2-for-1 promo codes that come out each year. In my opinion, think of it as "an extra free ticket" for a friend.

Plus you can always sell the extra one through the genuine TicketExchange dealer.

4) Sell any extra tickets later (only buy online electronic tickets at TicketExchange)
This way you can transfer to friends via email, or sell them directly without mailing anything.

Personally, I think this is much better than risk getting in trouble with scalpers or police circling around the subway stop each year. Have you ever have tried standing there trying to haggle with someone over a ticket price? Especially when you're just going to miss more of the match every minute?! Trust me, it is not worth the hassle and frustration to waste time*

If you really want to get your tickets today, here is what I recommend...

Get your Labor Day Weekend tickets in early July and sell the session you don't use.
Consider buying a US Open Mini-Plan Option (which costs $100 upfront deposit), then sell your extra unused tickets on TicketExchange. Usually you will come out about even.

US Open Hotels and Things to do in NYC

The American Express card is great for tennis fans who want a nice place to stay near the US Open in NYC.

In past years, it gives access to free pedicab rides from the 7 Train to the US Open Entrance. Plus there are new freebies each year when you flash your Amex card like the US Open ear radio to hear the live commentary.

Hotel in Flushing close to the US Open

Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel
  • This hotel is in Flushing, NY (Chinatown); just one "7 train" stop away
  • You can alternatively walk along Roosevelt Ave
  • Saves you time and parking fees at the stadium.
  • I have used it several times there in rooms that normally cost $300-$400/night.
Hotel window view - you can actually see the Unisphere of Flushing Meadows outside!

Get free referral bonus points (up to 3 free nights) with a Bonvoy Sign-up
  • Check out "How to enjoy the US Open" - Tips for the first-time US Open fan.
  • Remember to bring your Amex Card with you when you go to the US Open for annual freebies!

3+ Star Hotels nearest Arthur Ashe Stadium

Sheraton Laguardia East (Suite) - New York, USA
  • Ideally, look for one that is near a metro stop on the 7 train line
  • Allows you to get some rest at the hotel during the middle of the day
  • Use the "Show on Map" button at the top right.
If you plan on spending most of your time at the Open, then you might want to be able to walk there and back. Very useful in 2021 when the subway was flooded! Or if trains get backed up on nights when there's a Mets game playing. Ranked by user review ratings and offer at least 3-star quality.

Staying in NYC near Penn Station and the LIRR

If you're planning to do more activities in the city and only plan to go to the US Open once or twice, it might be better to explore options in downtown Manhattan. NYC has a lot of great areas to explore, so if it's your first time, I would dedicate at least 2 days to the city.

The fastest way to get to the US Open is via the LIRR from Penn Station for about $10 and takes 20 minutes with only 1 stop in between. Note that your room is likely to be much smaller and/or expensive.

Transportation Tips from your hotel

  • Many of these LaGuardia hotels offer a free shuttle bus
  • Alternatively, take the #7 Train to the "Mets-Willet Point" station.
  • Save your legs! You'll still need to walk half a mile to the US Open main stadium.

Visiting Manhattan NYC after dark

If you want to go into Manhattan after the games at night - just take the LIRR train all the way to Penn Station in Manhattan. The much slower way is the 7 train (no transfers required, just $2 each way!). Fare Tip: Put $8 or more on your Metro card and receive a 15% bonus!

  • Catch a popular Broadway Show in NYC - Just be sure to buy online tickets before they get sold out! It is very difficult to roam up and down Broadway at the last min...trust me, I've tried to get tickets for Wicked, and it was way over-priced at the box office!

  • Food: Just outside of the US Open are many food trucks lining up.
  • It is at the bottom of the ramp that comes down from the Subway and LIRR.
